Welcome. A moment-to-moment story...

Salem Historic Landscapes/ Entrance Corridor

Here is text from the
SALEM RECONNAISSANCE REPORT, Essex County Landscape Inventory:  Massachusetts Heritage Landscape Inventory Program, by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Essex National Heritage Commission

which states:

Gateway Landscapes/Urban Entrance Corridors
"... from the south via Highland Avenue. While all gateways are considered important aspects of the community, in some cases the streetscape is marred by poorly designed commercial areas, insensitive remodelling, demolition of historic structures, poor lighting and deteriorated roadway infrastructure."

A point and argument made at the Salem Public Hearing by two people - The Architecture is simply not in character with the existing architecture of downtown and is not following the initiatives listed in this report for a gateway.

This report is found on the Department of Conservation and Recreation,  http://www.mass.gov/dcr/stewardship/histland/reconReports/salem.pdf
