News article:
Lynn Planning Board challenges Solomine project
Daily Item, June 6, 2012 by Chris Stevens

'A little birdie said'...

2012 might bring more news for the area...

  • A conservation group is interested in purchasing land in Spring Pond Woods!
  • Wildlife Habitat reports have substantial evidence to provide for further land protection in and around certain identified locations!
  • Archeological and cultural resources have become an eye of concern for a federal recognized group.
  • The awareness of wetland areas have increased, with some environmental specialists.

Involved groups have not been named for the purpose of protecting the cause of preservation.  When (more news from the little birdie of) final decisions (bad or good) are concluded, more information will be shared.

Hopefully in 2012, efforts in the preservation of Spring Pond Woods will move forward.

`Peace, on Earth

News: Peabody Mayor seeks stronger relationship with Lynn and Salem

This may be a good time to seek regional unity among the cities of Lynn, Peabody and Salem. To create Spring Pond Reservation, in conserving undeveloped land around connecting wetlands, underground waterways, and watersheds of Spring Pond, the City of Peabody water supply.  Time is critical to "Strengthen Salem's wetlands ordinance to protect rare, endangered, and unique flora and fauna." ~ Salem Open Space Plan

Love this comment in the recent news of The Daily Item from the new Mayor of Peabody.... "He (Bettencourt) anticipates forging strong relationships with Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and Lynn Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy. He wants to talk to them about shared community concerns, including traffic congestion and future development."

News: Lowe's project dead

In the recent news of Lowe's cutting back stores, Lowe's has stepped away from building in Spring Pond Woods!  The Lowe's war may be over, but the fight to protect the area is not.

Conservation efforts will continue in protecting these woods, wetlands, watershed, Surface Water Protection zones, wildlife habitat, Native American sites, historical and cultural resources, and campground for children.  There was much to learn from the site in the past year and a half.  Not only is Spring Pond Woods beautiful, but it is rich in history and environmental importance.

Thank you to everyone who supported the cause in protecting Spring Pond Woods, one of the '1000 Great Places in Massachusetts.'

Older News Article: Local author writes about Spring Pond

In this undated news article which someone has shared, Leslie Courtemanche writes about the region of Spring Pond.  Leslie has written two books on the area close to her home in Lynn, near the borders of Peabody and Salem.  Her grandparents survived the Great Salem Fire of 1914 and settled in the Fay Estate, where her family has lived ever since.  Her father taught her to appreciate nature, teaching her the names of birds and flora.  When walking through the woods with Leslie, its easy to appreciate the knowledge she shares and of which that is nature.  She has more than common knowledge of identifying the sounds different species of birds.   Leslie in the past, has also given lectures in Lynn and Peabody on the various resources that exist around Spring Pond.

News: Lowe's pursues to build on wetlands in Florida and looses

Here is somewhat of a similar case with Lowe's wanting to construct on wetlands near important watershed area (as we have here surrounding Spring Pond Reservoir).

In Florida, the zoning of an area was amended to permit Lowe's (just like here in Salem) to build on wetlands near the outskirts of important waterways.  Earlier this year, the multi year battle ended with Lowe's loosing the case, after the company tried to appeal the restrictions in court.

Lions Clubs International teams with Wal-mart

In a national campaign, The Lions Clubs International has teamed with Wal-mart to collect used glasses at Wal-mart stores across the country. A kiosk is found in stores, where glasses can be dropped off. The Lions Clubs International is now able to receive extensive advertisement and goods through Walmart's global market. In turn, Wal-mart and The Lions are able to demonstrate the good from these actions to the community. The Lions Clubs International website, further demonstrates a care for environment, through a tree planting campaign (in light of a policy made in 1972, to protect the environment. Link: http://lionsclubs.org/EN/member-center/planning-projects/sight/eyeglass-recycling/index.php.

A question to ask is, 'Do the board members of the Lions Clubs International care about the environment?' There are in fact many members around the world, doing good to protect the environment through individual programs.

Confusingly,
1.  The Lions Clubs International has not responded to the concerns here. A division of the organization, the Lynn Lions Club, District 33N, has created and is affiliated with Camp Lion that has sold and is further selling acres of wild woodland for the destruction to build a Wal-mart expansion and new Lowe's.

2. The Lions Clubs International has received notification of the issues, through certified letters, hundreds of letters from an online petition, including a notice of complaint filed to the Attorney Generals Office in Massachusetts on the Lynn Lions Club and Camp Lion of Lynn Mass (by myself and others)... Reiterating the club(s) mission statement, charter's policy to protect the environment, or Camp Lion's Declaration of Articles to 'maintain a wild woodland'.

3. The Lions Clubs International is aware of the issues and concerns of the community, to save this spat of undeveloped land.

By ignoring the issues here, and by teaming with Wal-mart, are the Lions Clubs International now indicating support for the destruction of these pristine woods and wetlands in Salem?...Rather than saying NO to the very corporations (like Wal-Mart) whose project proposes to destroy it!

One may ask, 'Who are the Lions Clubs International?' The organization's great works does reflect somehow in the millions raised in funds, which in turn are mostly sent offshore. *Refer to: Tax documents filed by Lions Clubs International.

Letter: Say no to big box expansion plan.
Compliments to the Mayor of Salem, Lord Driscoll for recently being awarded 2011 Essex Heritage Hero. Salem is a notable city, also initiated with momentum by past leaders. Respectfully, Driscoll needs to be the “Essex Heritage Hero” and change her corporate priorities, which are causing nightmares for many locals and surrounding towns. Driscoll has allowed a plan to construct big-box retail stores for the open-space of Camp Lion, a charitable trust that serves around 1,000 children in the North Shore. Not only is Salem facing a lawsuit by Lynn, there are complaints filed on the Lynn Lions and Camp Lion with the attorney general, by myself and others. Recent discoveries find the Lion’s land was originally 150 acres granted by Elizabeth Trumbull to the Lynn Lions in 1945, including a grant from the city of Salem. Only 70 acres of this land remains today, and another 25 is eyed for transfer or clearing.
