Salem Chamber of Commerce event

This morning, educational flyers were placed on the vehicles outside of the Salem Chamber of Commerce event, concerning the proposed trash dump in Salem.  Most of the people who attended the event, picked up the flyer, absorbed their breakfast and left.   Here is a video shared by someone of what appears to be a Northside Carting employee, removing the flyers from cars.   If the flyer is informative, why remove it?

It is important for Salem businesses to know that The Salem Chamber of Commerce Coffee Connection was hosted this morning by Northside Carting, the same company introducing the new trash dump not far from these woods and surrounding homes, businesses and a school.  Here is a link to a cause created by Salem business owners to stop the garbage...stopthegarbagenow.com

It is also worth knowing that The Kennedy Development Group, who is introducing the Walmart/Lowe's scheme affecting these woods and surrounding homes and businesses,  is a member of the Salem Chamber of Commerce.  And the Northside Carting Inc. is too.

Stop the Garbage now

This letter was received and is posted here out of courtesy to a neighboring cause:

"I'm writing to inform you about what is going on with the Salem Transfer Station located on Swampscott Road, You may or may not be aware that the City of Salem is attempting to sell/gift the 8 acres of city land to North Shore Carting (hereinafter "NSC").

NSC currently leases the property from Salem for 12,500/year. Today they can take in up to 100 tons of construction waste per day. Historically, the annual tonnage has been steadily decreasing and was last reported to the DEP at less than 25 tons/day on average. The garbage and debris is transferred from smaller trucks into larger trucks and then transported to a NSC’s trash facility such as the one in Andover, MA.

If NSC is successful in acquiring-the property, they plan on tearing down the current facility and building a new transfer station.

The bad news is:
-That they plan on increasing the daily tonnage of waste to 400-500 tons.
-There will be no filtration of the air in and around this facility NSC claims it will be cost prohibitive
-The type of material processed here will soon include household garbage and other odorous wastes.
-There is no simple solution to the soon to be increased traffic conditions

If NSC is successful in acquiring the property, we as residents will face the following:

-Decreased Property Value by tens of thousand of dollars
-Potential of up to 2 million pounds of waste daily through Salem neighborhoods, from surrounding cities and towns
-Bottleneck Intersections, Increasing Traffic and Safety Issues (100+ trucks per day on Swampscott Road)
-Emission of polluting and potentially cancer causing particulates and unpleasant odors up to a mile or greater
-Disruption of wells, water and the underground eco-systems

As we currently stand, the Salem Board of Health put on a dog and pony show and ok'd the increase of material from 100/day to up to 500/day. The deal is not yet completed as the Mayor still needs to get the okay from the City Counselors before selling or transferring any property. Instead of waiting for the Mayor to turn our community into a giant trash hub for the north shore, a group of residents have filed an appeal in Salem Superior Court. Civil action # 2010-00574-A

This appeal will take time and money. This issue affects us all and we should share in the costs of fighting the City, A one time donation, or a smaller monthly donation, will go a long way toward helping us with this fight. Spending a few dollars today is a small price to pay to keep the trash out of our community and preserve our property values. If interested in donating, one can use the website stopthegarbagenow.com or please make checks out to Attorney Carl Goodman. Checks can be dropped off to me directly or mailed to:

A neighboring cause

Across Highland Ave (Rt-107) from Spring Pond Woods, is another cause fighting to protect the air quality from being potentially harmed in the community.

The old Salem Transfer Station is planned for expansion, changing the type of trash collected- from dry material to smelly solid waste.  Hundreds of garbage trucks will be increased on the roadways, traveling up and down Highland Ave in Salem, and Western Ave in Lynn.

Please check out StopTheGarbageNow.com for more information.
They are looking for assistance to help all area residents and business owners, who are in litigation efforts against the 400 ton/day Salem Transfer Station expansion, near the intersection of Swampscott Rd and Highland Avenue in Salem. There is an online petition, and the group is seeking donations to lawyer up.  Please see their website where to help out.

A new petition arises...

Another group is collecting signatures for a new petition to help limit air pollution and help save the trees!   If you happen to be going by Market Basket in Salem, stop by to check it out.

Here is a link to the incinerator issue, which is near Spring Pond Woods, on the other side of Highland Ave., near Market Basket, a school, residential homes and other businesses in Salem.  http://www.stopthegarbagenow.com/Home.php

The Marblehead Swampscott Commute

The Towns of Marblehead and Swampscott need to cut through Salem on the North West side.
If traffic congestion increases on Rt. 107, making it difficult for towns to access the north and highways for Rts.1 or 128.... are the towns at least aware?

Salem and Lynn Residents and officials have been attending the Salem Public Hearings, open to all members of the 'Public'.   A few residents in Peabody are aware now of different concerns.  If any member of the 'Public' has concerns or questions of this development, please join us at the next Salem Public Hearing, scheduled June 3, 7pm at 120 Washington St., Salem, 3rd fl (left off the elevators, last door on the right).

Please also join us at the next group meeting in opposition to the developments,
on May 26, 7pm at 16 Coolidge Rd, Lynn, or feel free to stop by and sign the petition.
There is also opposition to the new Sewage Dump on Swampscott Road... besides the air pollution, the dump will also increase the traffic with hundreds of trash trucks per day on Rt. 107.
