Welcome. A moment-to-moment story...

The Lion-Hearted

Camp Lion has been a good help to the community in all the years.
From what is known and heard...
  • Camp Lion has helped Camp Fire stay on the camp ground all these years.
  • Camp Lion has bussed underserved children up to the camp to enjoy a lunch they typically would not have?
  • Camp Lion offers the campground to children's organizations, when the grounds are available?
  • Camp Lion's trails are open to the public on the weekends for everyone to enjoy nature.
  • Camp Lion brings the community together with great fundraisers to raise money for charity.
  • Camp Lion members have done a lot for the community.
I wish there was an easy answer to understand what the deal is.  As a Camp Lion member said in the Salem News, the camp did not expect a great backlash from the community.   I hope they hear the community now, and wish they could end the deal.  The community supports Camp Lion if it needs help, as said before.

Camp Lion has lost land before...
Is the camp afraid they will loose more land?
The City of Salem took 4 acres by eminent domain from Camp Lion.  Today, Salem's public 4 acre parcel is assisting the Kennedy Development Group scheme to construct a Super Wal-mart and Lowe's here.   ( The Kennedy Development Group aided in the disappearance of a small Saugus community neighborhood to construct a Lowe's there :(

The City of Salem took Camp Lion's land on 8/31/1990 for failure to pay taxes.
(See Registry of Deeds, book 10553, page 517)
Over a year later on 10/15/1991, Camp Lion was able to redeem the property.
(See Registry of Deeds, book 11739, page 523)
On 8/26/1964 and on 5/23/1966, Camp Lion's land was taken away then also.
(See Registry of Deeds, book 5201, page 42 and book 5363, page 238)
There might be other takings?

Many (like me) hope to help Camp Lion keep all of their land, and for the community and wildlife it serves.  If there is any hope, we hope to find it.

Links to grants...  (Lets find more.)
The state is offering over $400,000 dollars in grant money to preserve Open Space

The federal government is offering grants to preserve historic and cultural sites, including Native American Sites.  It is worth inviting the Mass Historical Commission or other agencies to conduct an archeological dig to investigate the land further.  This could help the Camp Ground become a learning reservation and turn out to be profitable by having a museum.   Link... History and Culture Grants
