Welcome. A moment-to-moment story...

'Lions of the day' mission to preserve the site

The Lions Club of Lynn/ Camp Lion has been a great organization in the past, helping the whole community.  Many Lions Club members volunteered their time at Camp Fire.  Camp Fire is an active camp on Camp Lion, by which the organization is offered to use the grounds and facilities, serving 400 children.  The Boy Scouts use Camp Lion's facility in the rear, on occasion, in the wintertime.  The beautiful trails have been open to the public to enjoy on the weekends, and the Lions offer grants to other organizations in the community.  In the past, "The lions of the day thought it beneficial to keep an area forever wild as a refuge because of the urban expansion taking place throughout the communities."  ~ Camp Lion's website

Camp Lion's mission is honorable and respectable, and many are thankful for the organization for being able to preserve this place over the years.  But something has happened to change things.  4 acres of Camp Lion were taken by eminent domain by the City of Salem, and is now a public parcel being delivered to the retailer.    A sale agreement to clear acres of pristine wooded Open Space, preserved by past leaders, is now threatened by the proposal to construct a Lowe's/ Walmart.  Because of the past, some believe there may be a lack of choice today, in why the Lions are lending to selling portions of the land?  Some may wonder if the Lions are being strong armed against their very own mission?  I wonder this myself sometimes, after reading over a letter from a Camp Lion member who once expressed this fear to me... but even so, the 'glorious' facts about the proposal have been half truths, as been witnessed in the presentations of the Salem Public meetings, if it is believed to be a great idea.   I wonder if the Lions are waiting for the facts proposed by the retailer to fall apart, to end the deal? Just like I wonder if Lynn's Mayor knows the facts will prove the project will fail in the end.  Many might have lost faith in Mayor Kennedy, and think the battle is over, but not me.  Kennedy has pushed for the real facts to be further studied.  And the Lion's are making sure the demands of the neighbors are heard... so if you are a neighbor... be heard! (and thanks for signing the petitions.)

The purchase and sale agreement with the retailer was said to of expired in September, but the Lion's voted to continue with the sale.  It is said, Councilor Paul Crowley resigned from Camp Lion, but is he still a member of the Lions Club of Lynn?  Elizabeth Puleo resigned from the Lions after discovering the fact that Camp Fire will not receive a new facility from the deal and 400 children will loose a good camp, as the camp needs to raise funds to rebuild.

For the most part, the main members of the Lions Club of Lynn, are members of Camp Lion.  So if you know any of the members listed below, please reach out to them, as they may need our help.   Maybe the group needs to know the real facts of the issues, because as we found, Elizabeth who was a member, did not know all the facts, and as we seen, the full truth is not being presented very well by the retail reps in the Salem Public meetings.  The facts are not being presented very well by the Mayor of Salem either, in her public quotes in the paper, where she mentions the deal is only between 2 private parties, and that only 15 acres is being affected... not true!  Maybe the mayor of Salem needs our help too, in understanding the full facts?

  1. Peace,

How is it that all of these very intelligent people that you talk about who are involve directly or indirectly such as the Lynn mayor, Salem mayor, members of the Lions,(both Camp and Lynn)members of the Salem Planning Board, and many others Don't see all the "HALF TRUTHS" but you do?

    ReplyDelete
  2. A Salem Mayor should know that a Salem public parcel is involved with the whole deal. As to why half-truths were said in the local paper, is unknown.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I question Sean Crowley. He is pushing the land sale, and says the land is unusable, but isn't Camp Fire using the land?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Good for Liz and Paul for resigning! Paul needs to resign from the Lynn Lions as well. The organizations are linked.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Maybe Liz Puleo did not pay attend at the meetings, and just maybe she didn't even show up for all of the meetings! Maybe this is why there is so much misinformation. I am not sure where you are getting your misinformation but Paul resigned before the vote and he resigned from both Lynn and Camp Lions clubs. This blog never checks its facts before running with the misinformation, this blog only writes what suits there cause!!!

  6. Forget trying to talk to the Lions. Didn't important people talk to them, and gave them the facts but they still decided to vote to continue?
What's blinding them? Is it the cash?

Everyone should boycott every business instead of being nice.
Nice doesn't do anything! Change your strategies!

  7. Anon, 11:01am & 10:56am,
The facts you've read in the papers and on the agency forms here are not enough to make you think this whole project will be a disaster to the community and environment?

    How can you be blind?

With the information you know about the Lions, are you members or can you open dialog?

I do not see using the argument about Liz not attending meetings, as a strong one for the purpose of going forward with the deal. How much is the Lion's main members informed?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'ld like to have all the Lions attend a meeting in front of City Council!

They can be given all the facts there, and then they can respond what their new vote is, instead of listening to their leader Sean.

  9. Hey Mr Ed,

This site says that the document was probably signed in 2008. Sean Crowley was not even listed on the tax document that is posted above.

How is he the leader and how is he pushing for the land deal?
The Lynn Lions do not own the land the land was owned by Camp Lion and if you read the tax document you will see that Kevin Donahue was the president of Camp Lion.

I read this blog because I thought that you people may have something worth listen to but I see that you people don't know what you are talking about and have no real knowledge of any of the FACTS even when you have them in black and white and post them on your site.

And who are these important people that spoke to the Lions?

What authority does the Lynn City council have?
If that the council you are talking about.

  10. Anon,
I think Ed is referring to the current leader of Camp Lion who is President, Sean Crowley. Sean also gave quotes in the local papers.

I'ld like to know who spoke to the Lions and what information was given, if anyone could share please. Thanks

  12. Katerina,

Sean is the president of the Lynn Lions, based on the Salem news story and the Globe story.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That is correct president of Lynn Lions Club, Vice President of Camp Lion.
This is who Ed is referring to, no doubt.

I don't remember President Baker making comments. That is another question if he has any.

    ReplyDelete
  14. To be clear, Camp Lion owns the land according to the deed, and according to Camp Lion's website and the tax documents, the organization is linked to Lynn Lions.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Katerina,
Vice president is not the Leader unless the President is incapacitated or dead.

The stories that I read in the Salem paper and the Globe did not appear to push for the deal!It looked to be more about who the Lions are and what they do.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Katerina,

I find it hard to believe that the President of Lynn Lions has the ability to influence the board of directors of an other organization!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ouch- now there's an argument to be concerned about.

If the members of one organization are bound to the laws of another, and the head of the organization is a member of the other... maybe you have something there, that there could be influence?

We'll all have to take a look at the quotes from Sean. Was he the one who said the site was unusable, ignoring Camp Fire's use?

I cannot not go on much information said here, because this whole conversation is with anonymous people (LOL). But I enjoy the conversations.

No one is talking about the Kennedy Development Group. Why? They are the real evil enterprise. Wake-up everyone!!!

I don't know if there is a rule to make the Lions go to council to ask questions, but maybe they should go on their own to get the facts & save face. Yeah- I meant Lynn.

  25. I think you people have gotten so absorbed into a witch hunt your missing the point of your cause.
In an ideal world you could stop Walmart but you can't. It like running to the top of mountain that never ends.
Why not accept the facts and come up with some solutions to make the situation you paint as so dire better?
If they were going to build a Whole Foods and a farmers market you all would be clearing the land for them.
Lots of jobs will be created and area that is already busy has another store.
In the big picture Spring Pond is really not that important. The ONLY reason people are even remotely interested is because they own property near it...all of whom have bought it since Highland Ave has had some sort of development. The other two or three random advocates find something wrong with every development project from here to the end of the world.
Boycotting local groups only hurts the small guy just as you claim Walmart will hurt them, so you put your foot in your mouth again.
On the flip side I doubt any of the people who may boycott any of these businesses will make lick of difference. I take it your not exactly the ones with deep pockets.

As far as the kids not having a camp they will need to go elsewhere. So many options for the them as well. The wealth of camps on the North Shore is amazing. The arguement of the funds too is mute since if your a poor person you have the world as your oyster with all of the reduced programs you can send your multiple chldren too. They even pick your kid up and give them lunch. Lynn alone had a welfare program run by the Parks that no one went too. Salem has a welfare program camp where they give lunch and its a small cost of 25.00 for the summer! Which is waived. So if anything the enrollments at these social programs can increase!

Big corporations in other towns have been fought away.

No we would not like to clear the woods and historic resources for anything. It is sustainability of our natural and historical resources.

Lots of jobs will not really be created, but transferred from other places.
Clearing the woods so big boxes can take out others is not a great reason.

No. Many many people are interested in saving this area. And yes- there is something wrong with 95% of developments that needs fixing. Its called criticism of architecture and structures. But nothing more beautiful should replace the gem we have in these woods.

I didn't say anything about boycotting. I am only asking to educate the members in a nice way. Hopefully they will see all the facts.

There is no better place for kids than the natural environment of the woods. period. Kids need to get away from urban sprawl, not play scavenger hunts in the streets.

  39. Springpondwoods,

It appears you are all happy that Liz Puleo and Paul Crowley have resigned from the Lions.

I would let you know that the youth of our community are going to suffer a lot because of these two members not being involved with this organization.
The work that Paul has done for OUR YOUTH is second to none. He has worked tirelessly to raise money for Mass Eye Research and the youth of OUR community. It is a shame that he resigned because of the attacks he received by Springpondwoods and others.

Your group of advocates in the end will cause more harm to the our youth than a short term displacement of Camp Fire.

I hope that some day you will look at the whole picture and not just your own SELFISH cause and see how this sale of Camp Lions land Has benefited the community as a whole.

The Lynn Lions have been around for over 80 Years and have been DONATING their time to help others. Something most of you don't know is that the Lions do not get one penny for anything they do. They Pay $$$ to be members. It's all from the goodness of their hearts.

Do you not wish to listen to the facts? I am worried not everyone is fully aware of the whole truth.

    ReplyDelete
  50. No your not beating and kicking but you are provoking that action.

    Besides It's not your land.

Tear down your house and give it back to nature.
I would suggest that you sell it to the government they'll preserve it forever for only one tenth of this true value.

  51. There is no provoking such actions, and there is nothing wrong with spreading awareness to spread the truth. Hopefully someone will understand. I ask kindly for everyone to have a peace talk with the members of the Lions to spread the awareness of the facts.

You can own property and make a covenant to preserve the land, trees, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Why have you not Listed the names of all the people who work for Kennedy Development or all the executives of Lowes Or Wal mart who are the ines that are going to tear down the woods?

The good people from the Lions are only selling their land as they have a right to do.

I'm sure that all the Lions have been fully informed about what the deal is about.

You infer that Liz Puleo was not given all the information as to what the deal was about, thats why she resigned, yet she was a board member when this deal went down based on the tax documents that are shown above.

Your theory does not add up.

    ReplyDelete
  64. This is precisely my theory. If the Lions voted based on certain knowledge, as Liz, and then come to find Liz resigned because she did not know all the facts, then this questions how many voters knew or know all the facts... no?

Thomas Kennedy is the sole member of the Kennedy Development Group, who is at the center of the deals, and very informed.. no? This group reduced a neighborhood in Saugus, and bought out a church to build a Lowe's. Walmart and Lowe's are not from instate, so there is no way for local people to know any of the above, to reach out to... besides I tried calling Lowe's and was turned away three times by the customer service operators.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Are you really that naive?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Are you that naive to think that the Lions are misinformed?

The Lions are Lawyers, real estate brokers, accountants, contractors, and so on, all professional people. I find it hard to believe that they do not know all the facts or have been mislead.

    ReplyDelete
  67. As known, there was a Lion who was mislead.

Among the professions you listed, there is not one naturalist, historian, or urban planner listed. Therefore, the facts of the matter may not be fully understood. Sharing information from other fields is critical here, especially the environmental and historical piece of it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Definitely. Opposing views are posted here. I will have the chance to clip the article later.

The problem with the view, is not specific about this site. Yes jobs are important, but Lowe's should find another site. The unions should understand this, and not appear to be in this for 'special interest'.

Many generations of people (such as--myself, my father and my father's father have enjoyed and respected it. We never once took it for granted.) The pictures on this website are beautiful to look at and it is my hope that this area will be seen and experienced by people for many more generations to come and will not simply end up as just historical pictures on a website. If this website can help with that--all the power to it and keep at it! The battle to preserve is always hard fought. Camp Lion people used to appreciate their gift to be able to have this land, share it and keep it forever wild. I really wonder what happened to all those insightful, benevolent people.

4 acres of wooded land, of Salem Public property is being transferred to the retailer.

4 more acres of wooded land is being transferred from Camp Lion to the City of Salem for a water tower that the ward does not currently need.

How many acres of Camp Lion will be cleared for a 'camp pad'

And how many acres is Walmart acquiring?
