Welcome. A moment-to-moment story...

Letter to the Editor: wife of a union worker

A letter to the Editor of the Daily Item, was written today by the wife of a union worker (click on image to view).  She wants her husband to not travel far sometimes, to not have to sleep in a van for work.  She thinks the trees are tall weeds, and that someone's concern of the night sky is laughable.  She thinks this project will solve drainage issues (if its just weeds we are talking about?)  At least many already know there is a colorful arboretum of forest here.  If you don't like walking through the woods, visit this website often, to see how beautiful it is.

Here is a solution for the union workers, looking for 'Lowe's jobs':
Fill out an application to work in Lowe's stores.
1.  You will not have to travel far, to Danvers.
2.  You can use your trade skills to work in the store.

But the union workers probably do not want a job at Lowe's?  Lowe's is not known as a union store.  It might be safe to say, union workers would rather travel far and sleep in vans, rather than work in Lowe's?

Why would a union worker want to build a store in Salem that does not support union employees?  Would the union workers rather see their wives, friends and relatives work in non-union stores, constructed by their very own hands?

Thanks for writing this letter.

  3. This woman is unreal. I don't believe a thing from these workers unions. I've heard enough of their tales.

  4. don't waste your time with todays workers unions. they are not the union they started off to be

  5. Now its time to bash the union workers? I don't agree with a lot of how unions work in general. In the 1900s they were needed now they are pointless. The letter writer woman wants her husband to work locally. To imply that her husband get a job at Lowes is besides the point. Why not get a job at Walmart Katerina or as a caretaker of the trees at Spring Pond?

I'd put aside my thoughts on unions to give jobs to any American at this point. The ball needs to start rolling somewhere. People need to get back to work. Construction of these projects will start the wheel moving forward. Once they are completed other jobs will be created. Lots of people find a job at Walmart and Lowes fine.
Some people are worker bees, some are, some are union some are doctors.
The project in Rochester was not a mountain that was blasted. (In fact the very area back in the late 1980s was host to large department store called Globe, Pizza hut and other furniture stores) Rochester is a poor community in a somewhat rural area of NH. Local taxes did not pay for this project. It improved the area significantly. Prior to there was no where to shop in the area. There were no jobs. How do I know this? I spent 18 years of my life in the area. We as many other from the surrounding rural towns would drive over an hour to get to Rochester to shop. This is still the case for many. I currently have family who live in the very town and around the surrounding towns.
The traffic issues you state are simply people from MA(or other tourists) coming to NH to enjoy the state. Every little town in NH, traffic has exploded with large shifts of population escaping MA and moving there. This has created traffic all over. More people to an area.
I encourage you to actually research and talk to some of the people in NH who have benefited from this project. Some of these people cannot put food on the table. They also have a sense of pride where taking handouts is not an option. I have seen people eat squirrels before putting their families on state handouts. They are proud to work at Lowes and Walmart.
Think about the big picture all over.
At the end of the day trees are great but people don't care.

  6. Another side,
You contradict the people who actually live there and have been writing here.

I don't know where you get your info. But if you would like to provide more research, email peace@springpondwoods.com with your name and address and number to be reached at, instead of leaving anonymous comments. Thank you.

You do exactly as you claim the developer does.

  11. If Anon provides research, can they tell us how many mom & pop shops were closed in NH to create jobs at Lowe's. And not just within a small scope of area.

  12. To Anon 10:18

No one told the union workers to move & find jobs, but in this letter from a union workers wife, she expects those who live near the woods to move.

This woman is rude. Her vision on what a tree is vs what weeds look like is pretty sad.

  13. This land was not always zoned for a Lowe's. The union knows this. Salem recently rezoned it specifically for Lowe's to enter. Don't expect Driscoll to regain seat in Salem.

  14. Funny. Anon didn't pick on me this time. I've imagined Anon to be Sean of the Lions for some reason. Maybe I'm just wrong- 'blah blah blah' and Bless

  15. You look silly at this point. You have attacked everything now a union worker and his wife.
Big difference there Urban Kid- (you and your liberal arts degree from Salem State). The Union worker needs a job to support his family.
The people who live near the woods live off Highland Ave...all of which moved there since the invention of the car..so one would expect development on Highland Ave.

  16. 'Union Wife',
When a union wife attacks people who live near the area, when she has little respect for trees and culture, only so her husband can make a quick temporary buck on one job that will likely last a month or two in each trade... there is no respect in that.

The people who live near the woods have been good to Camp Lion all these years, and no one thought the Non-profit Open Space would change their mission of protecting the environment to destructing it instead.

  17. Did I forget to remention that one of the union workers in the Salem Public Meeting told me that his union boss keeps him busy and he only has one day off, once in a while.

Now why are the union men at the Salem Public Meeting saying they are starving for work, when one told me he is busy.

    This is dishonest and disrespectful.

  18. The quick buck is needed to support a family. So many construction workers are out of business. Some are lucky enough to work.
You are sadly naive and so far removed from reality I really cannot say anything more. I am sure you have good intentions but I doubt you are worried about where you next meal is coming from. Anything at this point that creates jobs even short term is a positive.

  19. Not 'anything' that creates jobs, is positive. Realistically, just as prostitution isn't... so are unethical projects. If you need a list of what is wrong with developing this site, email peace@springpondwoods.com or come to the Salem Planning Board meetings to listen to the challenging commentaries.

  20. Anyone who thinks temp union jobs will fix the economy is short sighted.
Non-profits that do not follow their missions, should loose 501c status, and their association with the international charter.

  22. Most union construction job are temporary

  23. Construction Unions are nothing more than hacks who band together to squeeze out the independent guys that work out of their garages. They don't even realize that most of the jobs they work on are the same jobs taking away good paying manufacturing jobs in America. Not to mention they are preyed upon by the union leeches who take their money and give little in return. Also, has anyone supporting a lowes or walmart read the labels on the products they consume. Made in China, that is what is on 90 percent of the stuff in those two companies. Every time you ring up an item at your local wal-mart you can just think of it as another dollar flying off to the Chinese empire.
You want to start saving this nation for your children, use your dollar as a vote. Stop shopping at walmart and lowes, there are hundreds of other options within the same area.

but I guess convenience and a few dollars a week is more important than the nation in which you live.
