Welcome. A moment-to-moment story...

Wintertime in the old Fay Estate

The gated entrance to the Fay Estate of Lynn, Peabody and Salem, through Fay Road, was guarded by the Gatekeeper who lived in the cottage to the right.  The early entrance to the estate was through Spring Pond Road.  Riding through the long roads on horse and carriage to reach the mansion, visitors were greeted by the grace of the landscape with beautiful and exotic trees and shrubs along the way, in the scene of an old English Manor estate.  The Gatekeepers Cottage has received some modifications today.  The cottage, three other buildings and many of the *trees still remain.

  1. Thank you Katerina for posting these wonderful photos--a glimpse of the past. I lament that Mr. Fay did not preserve this beautiful estate; but, hopefully this will demonstrate what can happen when such places are not protected. That beautiful area really should have been protected as tri-city park/arboretum/reserve. Can we learn from the past? Will your current photographs of Spring Pond Woods also be a glimpse from the past; and, will someone just like me in 50 years feel the same as I do right now, and ask, "How could they not protect the beauty of this spot?" "How could they be so short-sighted as to destroy this open space for ugly big box stores?"
I plead for those who have put Spring Pond Woods in jeopardy to think about the future and put a stop to the development of the remaining un-protected space of Spring Pond Woods and work together to make it into a reserve. Those of us in favor (there are many of us) will do all we can to help in making it a reality. Mayor Driscoll? Camp Lion? Kennedy Development? Are you listening??
